What is Mesothelioma Cancer?

"Mesothelioma cancer" is a type of cancer that is well-hidden to some people and this made it practically worrisome when some people are diagnosed of contacting the disease. Then, you may ask yourself  “What is Mesothelioma?. Mesothelioma is the name to a type of disease used to describe a cancerous tumor that involves the mesotheliomal cells of an organ in human body. Research have shown that Mesotheliomal cells form a protective lining over the lungs, heart and other abdominal organs.

As is it clearly shown that we have different types of mesothelioma cancer, the most common and ravaging type of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma.

The pleura is a thin membrane found between the lungs and the chest cavity of its sufferers. This disease provides a lubricated surface so that the lungs do not rub and chafe against the chest walls as expected. As ravaging as mesothelioma disease is, the most cause of this disease emanated from inhaling of asbestos fibers into the body system.

Records have shown that there are about 3,000 cases per year (and this happens mostly among men of about 40 years of age and above).  Another point to take note of is that with the current trends at which the disease is increasing per day there is likely that the sufferes of this terminal disease will be about 300,000 cases before 2030. Mesothelioma is usually known to spread rapidly through the mesothelial cells in the body to the heart and abdominal organs.

The most disturbing aspect of this disease is that the life span of mesothelioma patient is typically about 24 months after diagnosis. But a lot of factors are also attached to this such as the stage of the cancer in the body before the disease is detected, the lifestyle of such patient in relation to the need to have healthy living as well as other factors.

Incessant exposure to asbestos fibers has been confirmed to be the major causes of mesothelioma.  And, although asbestos exposure causes mesothelioma, but is has equally been established that it has a latency period of about 15 to 50 years after being exposed to asbestos. This means that once you have had the opportunity to work in an asbestos environment in the past, then you have the likelihood that you could be developing mesothelioma at any moment. However, if you or any members of your family have ever being exposed to loose asbestos fibers then you should be endeavour to subject yourself regular check-up for mesothelioma cancer.

In order to confirm that you have not contacted mesothelioma, it is ideal for you to carry out regular check-up for the disease. The ironical part is that the onset of this terminal disease is always hidden and not detected on time to give room for immediate action that will prevent the disease from going beyond control. However, I would like to advise you to know about the likely symptoms of this deadly disease.

The first symptom you should be very aware of is a constant pain in the chest that may lead to heavy breathing as a result of accumulation of fluid in the chest. Other symptoms you should also look out for include fever, weight loss and coughing. One important way to diagnose Mesothelioma is with a chest CT-scan.

The 4 Stages of Mesothelioma
Prognosis (the outcome)
Mesothelioma cancer has 4 stages of development. They are:

Stage I – is the stage at which the tumor is limited to the area of the lining of the lung. This in most cases is limited to only one side of the chest.

Stage II – this is another stage at which the tumor extends further to other organs within the chest cavity, such as the heart or lymph nodes in the chest.

Stage III – this is also the stage at which the tumor expands to the other side of the chest or it spreads into the abdominal organs. The lymph nodes outside the chest are affected.

Stage IV –this is the stage at which the cancer spreads to other parts of the body outside the chest cavity area like the brain, liver, kidney, bone, etc.

With the foregoing, it is evidently clear that Mesothelioma is deadly and a terminal disease which can show up especially when it is least expected. If you really want to live a fulfilled life that is devoid of all diseases, then you must make it a point of duty to engage in regular check-up that will give accurate information about your health status. This is highly important because the average survival of this disease is about one year after being diagnosed of the disease. And, only about 20% of patients who  are diagnosed of the disease early enough find their cancer early and mange it aggressively will reach the five-year mark.

Mesothelioma is a life terminating cancer and should not be toiled with. Remember working in an asbestos environment is more than enough to give you mesothelioma in the nearest future. Beware your health will determine how wealthy you are.

Keep yourself healthy.
